MailArt
The term Loooongism derives from the Latin longe, longus (long). It refers to a mail art work created in any technique or material, with any width, but with one essential condition: the work must not be shorter than four meters — beyond that, it can extend to infinity. This requirement for length is dictated by the philosophical criterion of the “philosophy of discomfort.”
We reject the term leporello, as we consider it inaccurate and irrelevant to the current artistic context. Given that the term was introduced in the 1980s, we find it inappropriate to apply it retroactively to artistic explorations of the 1960s, or to all manuscripts of the Maya, Aztecs, and other ancient cultures — especially considering the existence of Egyptian papyri and other scrolls.
Instead, Loooongism is proposed as a new pseudo-ism, something “unreal,” “imaginary,” or “invented.” Moreover, the use of such pseudo-isms serves as an effective tool for deconstructing outdated or fixed concepts and terminology within art historical discourse.
